Whether you’re launching a new online business or starting out as a freelancer, finding a niche is essential to ensure long-term success and growth. However, it can be tricky to find just the right one.

Here are 3 guidelines to help you assess your potential ideas for a niche and guide a decision.

1. Level of Interest

While this may seem fairly obvious, it’s essential that your niche interest you not just today, but for the long-term. The real benefits of choosing a niche become apparent only over time, and interest ensures your able to stick with it.

If you’re starting a business, the service or product it provides and the impact it has should be something that you’re passionate about. If you’re starting out as a freelance writer, your topic should interest you otherwise you’ll find it difficult spending time to research and develop meaningful content.

Choosing a niche you find interesting is more than likely to improve the quality of your product or service and fuel dedication.

2. Scalability

Scalability refers to how applicable the niche is for your business to become increasingly efficient. For example, if you decide to provide web development services, scalability would be developing components that can be re-used across projects. The scalability of a niche depends on how many of these factors can be implemented and the amount of time they can save across projects.

Time is money — if you charge a flat rate for your product or service in a scalable niche, over time you will earn more for less and less work.

3. Outsource Capability

Outsource capability refers to how much work for a niche can be done by others. Outsourcing allows you to handle more projects and if done at the right cost, increase profits. Outsourcing can be in the form of hiring other freelancers or businesses to handle parts of your business for you. Hiring a professional to complete a segment is also likely to increase the overall quality of your product and service.

While at first outsourcing work may seem like an unnecessary cost, over the long-term it can mean a large increase in profits.

While choosing a niche itself may be a debated recommendation, it does have its perks. If you do choose to find a niche, hopefully this quick article narrows your search!
